It originated from the Zoological Section of the Indian Museum in Kolkata, founded in 1875. Headquartered in Kolkata, ZSI has regional centers across India and employs around 300 scientists. It conducts taxonomic research, biodiversity assessments, and conservation studies. ZSI also maintains faunal databases and publishes scientific reports and journals. Its work supports environmental policy, wildlife protection, and sustainable development.
